Things to Do in Pergamino, Our Beloved City

We were not born, but we grew up and lived our entire adolescence in the city, taking it as our own. In this article, we tell you the things to do in Pergamino, the city where we grew up.

Basically, we grew up in this city. It was almost 13 years in which we strengthened important bonds of friendship, where we educated ourselves.

Pergamino is a city that is well located. It is located at northwest of the city of Buenos Aires. It is not far from there, only 225 kilometers of highway (promise of highway and dual carriageway) and on the way to the province of Córdoba. A route traveled by giant trucks, which move from the capital to the countryside or to other provinces.

It is also very close to another of Argentina’s most important cities, Rosario.

1) A little history about Pergamino

Parchment does not have a very ancient history, and it is not known exactly why it was named or when it was founded. Legend has it that the name of the city is due to the fact that some parchment scrolls were found in the stream of the same name. It is a fantasy version, although it is neither impressive nor amazing.

Some scholars of the indigenous language of the region attribute the name of Pergamino to an indigenous Spanish word meaning “reddish earth”. However, most theories indicate that it was some parchment found somewhere, or the use of animal hides as parchment.

The theme that one of the first paradores or rest stops was called “la Dormida de Pergamino“. Therefore, Pergamino was a place of passage and an obligatory stop for the wagons that at the time, in the 19th century and before, went from the capital to the provinces of central and northwestern Argentina.

Today, the city has no more than 100,000 inhabitants, and we don’t all know each other, despite what many people think. Houses in the city are usually low, with two or one floor. There are very few tall buildings, although I found many more on my last visit, but it is not what abounds.

The creek crosses the city and practically divides it in two. It is a meeting point for the locals, next to the Municipal Park that is next to it, especially to practice sports or walk on the embankment, or sit down to drink some mates and contemplate the stream. It is one of the main attractions to see in Pergamino.

In Pergamino we have María Crescencia Pérez, whose remains rest in the chapel of the Orchard. She was an Argentinean nun who in 2012 was beatified by Pope Benedict XVI, to whom several miracles are attributed.

7) Avenida de Mayo and San Nicolas Norte, center of the nightlife.

Fashions also pass in Pergamino. At the time, Specktra was the largest bowling alley in South America and was filled with people from all the surrounding cities. It had many years of splendor, but then came its decline. It went completely out of fashion and nothing was ever the same again.

Currently, most of the nightclubs and pubs are located on the main avenue of the city and a stretch of San Nicolas Street.

And I can’t fail to mention the soccer team with the most history in the city. Known as the Milan of Pergamino, Douglas Haig, with its characteristic red and black colors, is currently in the third division of Argentine soccer, but has had many spells in the B Nacional (second division). Juan is a big fan of Douglas.

For soccer lovers, the Douglas stadium is one of the places you have to see in Pergamino.

Located on Route 8, near the city’s Bus Terminal, this curious house in the shape of a racing car is a tribute by Arcadio Ninona, a car racing enthusiast, to his son, who was a competitor. On site, he built a replica of a Ford 38, the car his son raced. It is a very original construction and in fact it was highlighted several times both nationally and internationally.

The large green space of the city, with children’s games on a small artificial island surrounded by water and lots of greenery, ideal for drinking mates. It also has restaurants and a space for science, technology and innovation of the municipality.
